Writing Essay- Staying In Same Tense?

I'm writing an essay and I'm finding it difficult to stay in the same tense. I made a point, used and example, but when I try to explain it, there is no way to do that without using a different tense than the present."This is significant because if Romeo had not gone to the party which Lord Capulet hosted, he would not have met Juliet."... Or is that the right tense to use? Thanks for your help!
