How long should an “excerpt” be?

I am supposed to do do a literary analysis essay on an a "fiction prose selection" which can be an excerpt from a story, but I'm not sure how long an excerpt is supposed to be?an example would be great

    About one sentence, just enough information to understand the context of the excerpt and have it relate to what you’re trying to prove
