Is my introductory paragraph for my essay good or bad?

I'm doing an essay for my history class on the effects of the American civil war (NOT the causes!) on the north and south after the war had ended, like how it effected the economic, social and political factors of the north and south and the country as a whole after the war. This is my intro paragraph ..."The characteristics of the American North and American South prior to the civil differed greatly in regard to economic, political and social factors, thus setting the stage for the most divisive battle between fellow American citizens that America had experienced to date. The American civil war lasted four long years, from 1861 to 1865, and the effects of the civil war left a long lasting hostile divide on America’s social, political and economic scenes, both in the North and South. The uniquely different characteristics of the American North and South and how they interact with each other would be changed forever."Is that good or should I change it? Is it too long? Also, does anyone know the difference between affect and effect? Because I'm having a hard time trying to figure out when I'm supposed to use affect or effect lol

    1. Civil War should always be capitalized in our case, since it is the name of the war.2. Effect is a noun (think of special effect). Affect is a verb (I am going to affect the outcome of this election).3. The only thing I am caught on is the very first sentence where you say “prior to the civil war”. Prior means “before”, and your paper is about after the war, right? So you should say “in the post-war nation” or something that doesn’t use ‘prior’Good luck on your paper!
